SUPERVISES:        CORRECTIONAL OFFICERS
POSITION STATUS:   FULL-TIME, NON-UNION SUPERVISORY POSITION

GENERAL:
Minimum Requirements:
Education/Training: 
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice or similar subject or;
  • Graduation from High School or an accredited equivalency program.

Knowledge, Skill and Abilities:
  • Prison Policy and Procedure.
  • PA Department of Corrections Minimum Standard and Operational Procedures for County Prisons (Title 37).
  • Contemporary office practices and procedures and basic office software products.
  • Inmate Rights and due process.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • The Correctional Sergeant serves as the monitor for all security related activities in the facility. He/she has the supervisory responsibility over all correctional and support staff. The Correctional Sergeant possesses a broad range of correctional experience and technical expertise in correctional security. Works in conjunction with the Deputy Warden and answers to the Deputy and Warden in the chain of command.
  • The Correctional Sergeant is responsible for the supervision of all correctional staff on a daily basis. He/she provides professional and technical advice to the staff on proper operating procedure; disseminates information to staff and ensures staff is following 
  • procedures of the Susquehanna County Correctional Facility. Additionally, he/she is responsible for documenting staff misconducts and poor performance to appropriate management officials and acts as a mentor and role model for less experienced staff and exemplifies the professional standards of a corrections worker; meets regularly with subordinate staff to ensure they are familiar with all rules and regulations and follows up to ensure staff are adhering to proper procedure; routinely examines and monitors work of assigned staff  and is responsible for proper completion of all assigned duties; supervises staff during emergencies and abnormal occurrences; delegates appropriate responsibilities to staff with clear instruction as to authority and work objectives.
  • Ensuring that all daily reports are accurate and complete, including but not limited to Safety and Security Inspections, Radio Logs, Inmate Count Sheets, Key Count Forms, Fire Drill Logs, and Cell and Inmate Searches.
  • Conducts investigations on all matters relative to the security and grievance procedures; is able to perform the duties of all correctional posts; responds to emergencies, monitors inmates and inmate actives; reports signs of disorder and abnormal behavior; controls inmates, physically when necessary; in order to protect life and property; operates security equipment; prevents fights, assaults, disturbances, and escapes.
  • Evaluates all security needs and recommends revisions to policies and procedures when required.
  • Answers inmate request forms and refers any issues outside of normal authority to the Deputy Warden.
  • Attends meetings, seminars, and training as directed by the Deputy Warden.
  • Updates and modifies Officer scheduling and post assignments.
  • Inspects weekend mail for contraband.
  • Authorizes all new commitments and releases upon Administrative Order and their absence.
  • Must be able to perform the duties of the Deputy Warden in his/her absence.
Work Environment:
The duties of this position require direct contact with individuals in confinement who are suspected or convicted of offenses against the criminal laws of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Daily stress and exposure to potentially dangerous situations, such as physical attack are an inherent part of the position. The Susquehanna County Correctional Facility is a 24 hour, 7 days per week operation and as such various shift work schedules may be application to this position. Other work schedules/shifts and/or assignments may be assigned if deemed necessary by the Warden for training or proper coverage and supervision of the facility.

Required Certifications:

Pennsylvania Department of Corrections Basic Training Certificate or other recognized training facility/academy.

Physical Requirement:

Physical and Mental Agility.
Ability to walk up and down stairs.
Work for long period without rest.
